And yet among To Be Kind’s greatest assets are the points where it differs most from The Seer. The album kicks off with ‘Screen Shot’, an eight-minute introductory track featuring a simple, repeated acoustic riff upon which layers of guitar, vocals and percussion are gradually built until ending in a swirling crescendo of noise-rock. Though similar in structure, the almost ‘funky’ tonal shifts of the guitar and vocals make the track a far cry from the beautifully monotonous cultish chanting of ‘Lunacy’, The Seer’s opener.

We (Swans) have recently completed our new album. It is called To Be Kind. The release date is set for May 13, 2014. The album was produced by me, and it was recorded by the venerable John Congleton at Sonic Ranch, outside El Paso Texas, and further recordings and mixing were accomplished at John’s studio in Dallas, Texas. A good portion of the material for this album was developed live during the Swans tours of 2012/13. Much of the music was otherwise conjured in the studio environment. The recordings and entire process of this album were generously and perhaps vaingloriously funded by Swans supporters through our auspices at younggodrecords. com via the release of a special, handmade 2xCD live album entitled Not Here, Not Now.

For instance: ‘To Be Kind’, the album from which Swans mostly played while touring ‘The Seer’, is ten tracks and 121 minutes long.

Swans are a band on a roll. To Be Kind is this years first masterpiece. A stunning, sprawling record that stands tall in a yer surrounded by the yapping mice of attention seeking chancers, a stunning work of art in a gallery of fools and the totem release in a year that’s also full of intriguingly ground breaking records

10. Release date: 12 May 2014. Country: United States. You’ve probably seen them; they’re everywhere these days: pictures of nice pleasant beaches, gently undulating hills, or soft dappled light flowing through breaks in a woodland canopy, all accompanied by some godawful pious quote about the singular importance of kindness. They spread through the internet like an outbreak of cholera. Kurt Vonnegut: ‘There’s only one rule that I know of, babies – God damn it, you’ve got to be kind. Musically, To Be Kind doesn’t offer an enormous deal of innovation on its predecessor – but when that predecessor is 2012’s sprawling epic masterpiece The Seer, that’s hardly a bad thing. To Be Kind progresses through long, winding drones and tiny tight riffs, always repetitive but never exactly the same from one repetition to another.

All music published by Young God Publishing (ascap) (administered by Mute Song outside North America). Label Code (Sticker): LC 27959. Matrix, Runout (CD1 variant 1): 01 962 01 ✳ 53521965. Matrix, Runout (CD1 Mould variant 1): A. Matrix, Runout (CD1 variant 3): Sony DADC A0102835654-0102 21 A00.

Gira's vision is a bit less dark in the 21st century than it was during the Swans' first run in the '80s and '90s, with fewer lyrical images of rage and torment, but he's no less intense as he barks and howls his lyrics of life in a fallen world, and his music is every bit as physically. powerful and challenging.

While the entirety of the album felt like an unscalable mountain range, the title track from The Seer was the Everest; on To Be Kind, Bring the Sun / Toussaint L’Ouverture tops it by about two minutes of smoldering menace. On the particularly gnarly Oxygen, a compulsive riff chisels its way into the brain, over and over, a bridge chant asking to break my bones, asking later to be fed, literally woofing, begging for air to keep going

Comments to album Swans - To Be Kind
Nidora
One of the greatest records ever recorded, but seeing them live couple of years ago was beyond anything I had ever heard before. It simply changed my perspective, not only on live music, but life and music in general. No music, live or recorded has moved me like that since? I`m still waiting...
Lightwind
Long hair man with name like godzilla says weird thing in odd voice and make songs that go on for long time. I like bass in songs and other noises they sound good. Bam bam chiiiii, bam bam chiiiii, bam bam chiiiii, dum dum dum, dum dum dum
Thozius
Side D is almost unlistenable because of the pops and clicks that were there from the beginning, the intro of Just a Little Boy has 2 noticeable bumps close to each other, the pressing is a little light, but the sound quality and packaging otherwise are superb.
Coiriel
Locked groove on side B is still a problem. Thankfully Mute refunded me. Although the locked groove isn't a massive problem (I just drop the needle past the groove, it misses the start of the song but 99% of the album is listenable) I would recommend seeking other pressings.
Muniath
Seems like a few people have reported issues but I just wanted to throw it out there that my pressing (which was bought on release day) is damn near flawless. MPO always press good stuff and this is no exception - superb mastering (it sounds really dynamic) and playback is very quiet and clean. Not sure if there's been a subsequent identical repressing with lower quality control but I can definitely vouch for the quality of early copies.

Absolutely stunning album! One of the best sounding albums on CD that I own too. It's not an easy listen, but it's one of the band's most accessible - very rhythmic with a heavy emphasis on percussion. The vocals are used like they're an additional instrument; they have a chanting quality where the tone of voice and it's delivery is more important than the lyrics themselves. For me this is one of the best albums of this decade so far; an experimental masterpiece.

Same issue here - have now returned two copies that are faulty - same locked groove problem on side B - still awaiting replacement one month later - great music - shoddy pressing and poor customer service by Mute.
Gir
Today I received my second copy which is faulty. The first song on side B stays stuck in the groove. The locked groove is even visible (a small blank line). I tested it on different systems and there are others with same issues (https://www.reddit.com/r/vinyl/comments/4hm6l0/swans_to_be_kind_vinyl_lp_stuck_groove_pressing/). Will send it back.

This is one of the best albums ever made.It both tests and rewards your patience...and when the currents configuration disbands, it will be a sad day.

Somebody had the day off, and that somebody may have nipped into town to the record shop, the same somebody may have spent a tiny bit more than they had intended to, can’t say any more than that. What I can say though, is just how good ‘To Be Kind’ by ‘Swans’ is. It’s their 13th studio album, and the only one I own (as of today) and is a triple vinyl. I have heard it before on spotify and that’s part of the reason I bought it. Here is some stuff blatantly stolen from Wikipedia:Upon its release, To Be Kind was widely praised by music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 88, based on 35 reviews, indicating “universal acclaim”. Mark Deming of Allmusic gave the album a positive review, stating: “Michael Gira is a man unafraid to follow his muse wherever it may take him, and To Be Kind is another example of his singular vision writ large without compromise.” Anna Wilson of Clash praised the album, describing it as “Karlheinz Stockhausen’s jarring classicism, Captain Beefheart‘s twisted blues, and the industrialism ofEinstürzende Neubauten coalescing into a swirling musical miasma.” She also stated that the album is “near perfection.” Benjamin Bland of Drowned in Sound gave the album a 10/10 score and stated: “A two-hour odyssey of similar proportions to The Seer, this is an album that emphasises rather than establishes Swans’ reconfirmed position at the top of the experimental rock tree, but that doesn’t make it any less of a thrill.” He also further commented: “Now that this mission has been completed there is space for To Be Kind, and future Swans records to affirm, rather than prove, that Swans are, and perhaps always have been, the greatest rock group on the face of the planet.” Writing for Rolling Stone, Kory Grow also compared this album to The Seer as well as the 1996 effort Soundtracks for the Blind, noting how Swans’ sound has evolved so that they “don’t just crush—they hypnotize”. The Needle Drop gave the album a 10/10, making To Be Kind the second ever contemporary album to receive a perfect score from the site, after Death Grips‘ The Money Store.Ross Horton of musicOMH gave the album a 5-star score, commenting: “Gira shows that the Swans resurgence isn’t a fluke.” Stuart Berman of Pitchfork Media praised Gira’s efforts on the album, stating: “He’s responded in the best way possible: by producing a record that, in structure and scale, is every bit The Seer ’s equal, yet possessed by a peculiar energy and spirit that proves all the more alluring in its dark majesty.” Rory Gibb of The Quietus wrote: “By this point they’ve further coalesced into an inseparable entity: on To Be Kind we experience Swans as totality, all seething ebb and flow, crafting music that seems to breathe of its own volition.” He also stated that the album’s songs “feel more fluid and open-ended than before, expressive and rich in possibility.” Colm McAuliffe of The Skinny also gave the album a positive review, stating: “Despite the two-hour plus running time, Swans appear to be – gasp! – enjoying themselves; they’re still staring into the abyss but the abyss is no longer staring back.” He also noted that the album “displays much more diversity than its immediate predecessors.” Louis Pattison of Uncut wrote: “Yet as the name suggests, To Be Kind does feature a quality hithertorare in Swans: that of tenderness.” He also further stated: “Michael Gira is not only still moving forward, but making some of the albums of his career.”Nevertheless, Jon Dennis of The Guardian was mixed in his assessment of the album, describing the album as “uncompromising to the point of overindulgence.”[—————————————————It was a bit expensive, but worth it. Oddly enough it reminds me of P.I.L at times, and at others pick a post-rock outfit at random, and a bit of Slint. To be honest it doesn’t matter much though, I love it, that IS what matters.
RUsich155
My copy of this is mislabeled on the second LP; the labels on both sides read "Side Three"
Detenta
Excellent pressing, sounds crystal clear. Worth the price.
Jeyn
my copy has a poster but not the dvd. The vinyl came with some white marks that seemed like fingerprints ... I was hoping this to be a pure analog recording, but at first listen it didn't sound like one to me. I wrote to the Youndgod website and the answer was: "I believe they were recorded digitally. Brandon".
Moonworm
cristianHa I wrote to the YG website and the answer was:"I believe they were recorded digitally…"Thanks for looking into this. While I've thought it sounds good, something told me it could sound better. I'm just going to have to assume that this is what my ears have been telling me.
Loni
The recording still sounds fantastic.
Gna
On my side b, it's written "side two yg45" instead of yg46
LONUDOG
To Be Kind, by Swans, is not only the best Swans album I've ever heard, not only the best new album so far of 2014, but one of the best albums I've heard in my life. This is music to submit to. There is nothing you can do but give in to it, just sit there and take it, try to contain it, let it wash all over you, drown in it, and hope to get out intact on the other side. This is what gods listen to when they get stoned.Masterpiece.
Faezahn
Wouldn't it make more sense for B2 to be labeled as "Bring the Sun" and C as "Toussaint L'Ouverture" as I'm fairly certain that's their crossover point? The way they're split up on the album.
Dagdardana
The crossover point is closer to the 17 minute mark of the regular version of the song, that's when the crashing guitars stop and the Toussaint lyrics start.
Meri
+++, AAA, !!!> $$$
Macill
This is the U.S. version, not a mispress. The European version has "Kirsten Supine" run before "Oxygen".
Siatanni
I own the European version and Oxygen comes before Kirsten Supine
Dusar
Mine came with 'Oxygen' and 'Kirsten Supine' in mixed order. Is it just a faulty batch or does the whole 1st (?) pressing have faulty track order? Also, there seems to be two labels printed on top of each other on side 5.
skriper
Check the release notes.
Madis
If someone can get a signed version cheaply to the Netherlands, hit me up!
Kelerius
my copy have some fingerprints, poster, signed in back cover and the live DVD included
superstar
Stunning follow up to The Seer. Just amazing.
Micelhorav
Not played mine yet - might give it a go then !
Malalanim
Mine just arrived signed... Is this true for all the copies?
Frosha
Pre orders off of YOUNG GOD RECORDS were signed by Gira.. a perk of pre order I guess! :-)
Anasius
yeah every record bought on Young god records gets signed by Gira
Kahavor
My side E is also mispressed but I received the live DVD with mine. Strange. My copy also arrived with tons of scratches and fingerprints...
Fordrekelv
Nope, at least not on my copy. Even though the sleeve lists 'Kirsten Supine' running first, 'Oxygen' is the first track on Side 5.
Tejora
Flip flopping 'Kirsten Supine' and "Oxygen' doesn't create any more room on a single disc if they are the only two tracks on Disc E. This is just the U.S. version. The European version has 'Kirsten Supine' running first.
Cha
its not a mispress. they moved the songs so it would fit better on the record
Rexfire
I think I have a mispress. My Side E has Oxygen before Kirsten Supine. It also doesn't have the live DVD that was included in some of them, so I'm assuming that was only inserted in some copies randomly.
Manazar
Mine came with the live DVD. Does any one know if they all do?
Thordigda
yeah they were just added randomly. i got one with a digital download card
Thomeena
Apparently only certain ones did. I preordered it and mine didn't have one.
Auridora
Amazing record and gorgeous packaging! Probably the nicest piece of wax that I own.
Gravelblade
The Seer' was just them warming up. You often wonder how hard and how far a band can push their sound, wonder no more. With the release of this daunting new collection of songs, Swans have now gone well beyond where any kind of expectation could have predicted. The irony above everything is that despite the thunderous forces being harnessed and in some cases literally tamed throughout each piece, this is the most stable line-up the band have ever had. Consider that for a moment, pause briefly to let this detail sink in. It has now been three albums with the same six men at the core. I don't know if things are mellowing or if the chemistry is too potent to break apart but the results speak for themselves. We have some kind of mutant funk/blues which comes through here and there and then there are those cascading waves of pounding guitars. Who really shines on here is Phil Puleo, one of the band's drummers and main percussionist. What he does on these songs is to slam them into the wall and then brutally pummel their delicate sense of melody into pulp. The guy's kit must have been a fearsome arsenal to behold in the studio, never mind how imposing it's going to come across live. But I digress. Christoph Hahn and Norman Westberg have most definitely gelled as a duo working together, listening to what they came up with it becomes quite difficult to tell them apart. Their playing wends in and out like snakes in the water deftly stalking prey. Most people reach 60 and begin to consider retirement, more than a few are already dead but not Michael Gira. So before all muck-raking rags go off on a bender with their insights and ephemeral, fair-weather praise, allow me to ask one thing: how is this man still able to do this at all. He could have continued making charming records with his Angels or resigned himself to sitting at his desk with an acoustic guitar but he's chosen to put himself in the cross hairs of fate. This cannot be easy to do for him and 'To Be Kind' is about the last thing this album is.We're taken out back and put through a punishing regimen for almost two hours, just getting through the first half of what's on here is exhausting.Jesus Christ you think, how much more of this can they endure? If there's a breaking point, then this collection of players are eager to find it. You can literally breathe in the heat and sweat which brought about some of these performances. The music itself is given greater importance than the words and by doing so one is totally immersed in the swells and echoes of sound; Gira's words are, naturally, less than complimentary when it comes to human interactions. "Some Things We Do" is completely stripped of any and all emotion, a cold and contemptuous meditation on getting through this thing we call life, the lie of contentment.I hate to reference something I wrote earlier about him, but there's a short piece in his book The Consumer where he described himself as "a very passionate dildo" and longed to heap gasoline on himself and his lover. He concludes by stating that "I make myself sick". Maybe the aforementioned song is a continuation of this, maybe it isn't but I'm grateful to receive more either way.Far be it from me to try and glean any further nuggets of wisdom out of this thing, so I'll just wrap it up by coming straight to the point. 'To Be Kind' is the sort of record you'd be a fool to pass up. It's the product of massive effort and is a near-herculean undertaking, disregard the chatter you're going to encounter in the coming weeks and months about what this song means or where that song was designed to take your thoughts. Take it in and hold that poisonous cloud deep in your consciousness. Let it stew, let it permeate, let it fill the air and most importantly:Let it endure.
Wat!?
yet another solid return in this crowd-funded release, full of epic length tracks, some of which named after the big spender contributors to the album's funding. "a little god in my hands" is of course an amazing standout track and was released for free download prior to the album's release. a must have for any swans enthusiast.
