Ernst Hermann Ludimar Meyer (8 December 1905 – 8 October 1988) was a German composer and musicologist. His works include numerous songs, as well as chamber music, two symphonies and other works for orchestra, an opera, and an oratorio. He wrote numerous musicological articles as well as a book on English chamber music. His pupils included Serge Hovey
When Soviet violinist David Oistrakh performed at the reopening of the Unter den Linden Theater in September 1955, the event was as much political as artistic. The Unter den Linden, East Berlin's opera house, had been closed since the war, and having the Soviet Union's most famous violinist appear there, before his first appearances in the United States since before the war, was touted as a political triumph for the East German government. That was half a century ago, and the East German government, along with its political triumph has been swept onto the garbage heap of history . As accompanied by Franz Konwitschny leading the Staatskapelle Berlin, Oistrakh's performance is lyrical, ineffable, and wholly transcendent of the time and place of recording. It remains a musical triumph for all humanity.

The libretto written by the composer’s friend Franz von Schoeber is a romantic melodrama set in the Asturia region of Spain of the 8th century, and is based on historical fact.
